The ratio fo inbound to outbound travel in thew CSO stats for May shows 39.3pc inbound and 60.7pc outbound.
One of the great changes since pandemic, partly if not largely due to the methodology of the CSO, is the ration between inbound and outbound passengers in Ireland’s visitor and trip statistics.
The ratio prior to pandemic was around 45pc outbound and 55pc inbound, related to aviation and shipping statistics. Since pandemic the ratio had reversed and is 70/30 in the opposite direction.
Change in CSO methodology
There was a significant change CSO methodology in 2023 which presents difficulties in comparing pre-pandemic figures. It now relies on a single passenger survey with stricter sampling rules. The new survey is also conducted by an interviewer rather than filled out by the passengers themselves. The change had the effect of almost exactly reversing the ratio of inbound & outbound passengers through the airports and ports, 60/40 outbound instead of 60/40 inbound.
