Lufthansa has launched the IATA Turbulence Aware programme to improve flight safety, operational efficiency, and passenger comfort through real-time data sharing. Participating airlines including SWISS and Edelweiss Air contribute anonymised turbulence measurements from onboard sensors to a central database accessible by pilots worldwide.
The system relies on swarm intelligence from thousands of equipped aircraft that transmit continuous data on turbulence intensity, location, altitude, and timing. Pilots view colour-coded symbols directly on cockpit navigation maps, allowing more precise route planning that supplements conventional weather forecasts.
Francesco Sciortino, Hub Manager Frankfurt shared “With IATA Turbulence Aware, we are setting new standards for safety and comfort in aviation. This technology enables us to offer our passengers a smoother and more pleasant flight experience while making an important contribution to safety in global aviation.”
Measurements from Lufthansa aircraft also feed into the German Weather Service, refining long-term forecast models. The initiative reinforces the airline group’s focus on innovation and delivering a superior travel experience for customers.
