Westmeath’s Castle Varagh Hotel to expand wellness centre

The Castle Varagh Hotel in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, has submitted planning application for a new, purpose-built wellness centre to expand its current guest offerings. 

The proposed development, spearheaded by hotel owner James Coffey, aims to further establish the hotel as a key tourism destination in North Westmeath. Key features of the plan include anew single-storey building designed as a state-of-the-art wellness facility and an internal courtyard within the grounds of the existing three-star hotel.

A planning decision from Westmeath County Council is expected on or before 5 May 2026. 

Castle Varagh Hotel opened in December 2022 following a full refurbishment of the former Hotel Castlepollard, the venue has quickly become a local hub for dining and events. The hotel was recently named one of the “Best Places to Work” in the Irish hospitality sector in 2025.

Situated on The Square, Castlepollard, it is a central part of the town’s ongoing €4.7m regeneration project. It currently offers 18 bedrooms, a bar and bistro, and function rooms like “The Granary” and the “Garden Room
