Amsterdam has implemented a prohibition on outdoor advertising for cruise ships and other high carbon products from 1 May 2026. The city became the first capital in the world to introduce a legally binding ban on advertisements that promote fossil fuel use and high emission travel. Officials removed adverts for cruises, airlines and petrol cars from public spaces and the transport network.

The measure forms part of efforts to reduce promotion of lifestyles linked to high carbon emissions. Advertisements for cruises no longer appear on billboards, bus shelters or other out of home sites across the city. The policy applies to commercial promotions that encourage air travel holidays and cruise trips.

Enforcement has begun and penalties support the restrictions. The ban affects how cruise operators and travel companies promote services in Amsterdam. Separate rules limit the number of cruise ship calls to 100 per year from 2026 and plan relocation of the city centre terminal by 2035.
