Italian court blocks royal caribbean backed cruise port project in Fiumicino

Italian authorities have overturned environmental licences for a proposed cruise port in Fiumicino near Rome. The Regional Administrative Court of Lazio issued the decision. 

The project backed by Royal Caribbean Group included a cruise port, marina and commercial areas. The planned capacity for the site was over one million passengers per year, and the port was to be located approximately 30 minutes from central Rome, up to thirty minutes closer than the current port.

The court ruled the project followed incorrect procedures after appeals from local groups. Cruise ships currently use Civitavecchia port one hour from Rome.
