Visit Algarve is encouraging visitors to discover the year-round region on foot, with a hiking holiday offering the perfect opportunity to experience its dramatic coastline, rolling countryside and authentic local culture at a more relaxed pace.
The Algarve’s 16 municipalities offer traditional and distinct experiences that allow for visitors to discover its rich heritage as a region. Visit Algarve has recommended seven hiking routes across the region, ranging from easy 4.6km trails to difficult 21.4km routes.
The recommended routes include the charms of Alcoutim, a 4.6km easy trail through the border city; the Endiabrada and Hidden Lakes Trail, a 7km easy route through Mediterranean woodland; the Rota Vicentina Historical Way Carrapateira–Vila do Bispo, a 21.4km easy to moderate scenic route; and the Via Algarviana circular route Vegetable Garden Path, an 8.2km moderate trail starting in Monchique. More difficult routes include Section 7 of the Via Algarviana Salir–Alte, a 16.4km route, and the Grande rota do Guadiana circular route Barrancos–Furnazinhas, a 7.8km difficult itinerary. Known for its promise of more than 300 days of sun per year, the region is home to authentic gastronomy and a range of outdoor activities from surfing to cycling, walking, and birdwatching.
Shoulder-season holidays were predicted to be one of the biggest travel trends of 2026, as more travellers seek better value, fewer crowds and milder temperatures.
