The Ulster Aviation Society has been preparing for its participation in the European Heritage Open Day (EHOD) weekend on 12-13 September 2026, offering free public access to its historic aircraft collection at Maze Long Kesh, Lisburn. Aviation enthusiasts, families, and history buffs are being invited to explore one of Ireland’s most impressive collections of historic aircraft, with the event having grown significantly in recent years. Building on the success of EHOD 2025, which attracted a record-breaking attendance of more than 7,200 visitors, the Society hopes to welcome even more guests to its unique aviation heritage centre, which is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s largest European Heritage Open Day attractions.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Society’s two authentic Second World War aircraft hangars, which housed an impressive collection of more than 55 aircraft and military vehicles. Many exhibits will be displayed outdoors throughout the weekend, with some aircraft making their EHOD debut. Volunteer guides will be available across the site to provide insights into the history, restoration, and significance of the exhibits. The weekend also showcases the behind-the-scenes work carried out by the Society’s volunteers, with restoration projects underway in Hangar 2, giving visitors a rare opportunity to see aviation preservation in action and learn how historic aircraft are maintained for future generations.
The event runs from 10:00am to 5:30pm on both Saturday and Sunday, with entry and parking completely free of charge. Extensive parking facilities, wheelchair access, disabled amenities, baby-changing facilities, and guest Wi-Fi are available to ensure a welcoming experience for all visitors, with no pre-booking required. Adding to the festival atmosphere, the Wartime Living History Association will present World War II re-enactors, while members of the 501st Legion NI provided Star Wars-themed photo opportunities. Live entertainment will also be provided by Rock Choir NI, and food and refreshments will be available on site throughout the weekend.
The Ulster Aviation Society shared European Heritage Open Day provides an unparalleled opportunity for the public to engage directly with reland’s aviation heritage and the volunteers are already looking forward to welcoming visitors from across the island and further afield.
