The Rhine River is currently experiencing historically low water levels due to extreme heatwaves and severe summer drought across Europe. Navigable depths at the critical Kaub chokepoint dropped to a record low of just 12 centimetres (under 10 inches), which has effectively halted continuous ship navigation and split the river’s traffic in two. Because river cruise ships usually require at least 30 centimetres of water clearance under their hulls, operations are heavily disrupted.
Cruise lines are rarely cancelling trips outright. Instead, they are turning itineraries into what industry experts call “magical mystery tours” to adapt to the dry riverbed: Lines with identical fleets are performing “cross-ship swaps”. Two identical ships will sail from opposite directions to the shallowest bottleneck. Guests exit their ship, get on a bus to bypass the shallow area, and board the sister ship on the other side to finish their vacation in the same cabin category.
Many lines are replacing impassable river stretches with lengthy motorcoach rides to ferry passengers to scheduled sightseeing ports and land-based excursions. Ships are being forced to change their embarkation and disembarkation locations. Some lines are skipping problematic ports entirely or hosting overnight hotel stays instead of sleeping onboard.
