Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport handled 5,871,137 passengers in July 2026, marking an all-time record and a 6pc increase compared to July 2025.

The surge was driven by massive growth in international travelers seeking a safe summer holiday spot amidst global instabilities.

The numbers were 9.5pc ahead of pre-pandemic. Rolling annual was 59,002,346, marking a 4.8pc increase on the twelve months to July 2025.

Data released by Spain’s airport operator, Aena, details the massive surge: Over 25.8m international passengers used the airport from January to July, up 5.7pc year-on-year. Domestic traffic grew slightly by 1.6pc to just over 8.3m travelers in the first seven months.

The spike in Barcelona traffic aligns with a record-shattering summer season for the entire Aena Spanish Airport Network, which processed 34.4m passengers in July alone. Barcelona-El Prat remained the second-busiest hub in the network, trailing only Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport.

Due to the constant traffic boom pushing the facility to its absolute limits, plans are currently underway to begin physical expansion works on the airport starting in 2029.
