United Airlines has unveiled the largest international expansion in its history with 10 new destinations for 2027: Okinawa, Toulouse, Luxembourg, Ljubljana, Olbia, Catania, Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille and Terceira. The airline has added new routes from Los Angeles to Osaka, Denver to Paris and Washington Dulles to Milan Malpensa, while restoring service between San Francisco and Tel Aviv. United has also revealed the opening assignments for its brand-new Airbus A321XLR, which begins international service 1 December from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin before expanding to Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille in 2027.
Newark serves as the primary hub for the expansion, with daily A321XLR service to Luxembourg beginning 2 April and four weekly flights to Ljubljana following 12 May aboard a 767-400ER. Three weekly 767-300ER flights to Olbia begin 27 May, with Catania joining the next day at four flights per week. The XLR returns for Ibiza from 31 May, Valencia from 2 June and Marseille from 4 June, while a 737 MAX 8 operates to Terceira three times weekly beginning 9 June. Beyond Newark, San Francisco-Okinawa launches 27 March with three weekly 777-200ER flights, followed 28 March by the return of San Francisco-Tel Aviv.
United’s network planning strategy targets destinations that lack convenient access from hub airports, with traffic data often understating such markets because passengers appear bound for a major hub even when it is only a waypoint.
The airline served just over 20 European cities in 2017, with much of the network concentrated in London, Frankfurt and Munich, and now counts 53 destinations across the Atlantic and 34 across the Pacific. United’s XLR configuration features 32 premium seats comprising 20 Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus recliners, with 4K OLED screens, Bluetooth connectivity and free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members.
