Simón Bolívar International Airport, which serves Caracas, is officially scheduled to resume commercial domestic and international flights on 1 September 2026. The airport has been closed to commercial traffic since suffering catastrophic infrastructure and runway damage during the devastating 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude twin earthquakes on 24 June 2026.
Because the main terminals suffered severe structural damage, commercial flights will operate out of newly constructed provisional facilities. The temporary international zone spans 4,300 m² with 4 boarding gates and 780 passenger capacity, while the domestic area covers 3,300 m² with 3 boarding gates and 480 passenger capacity. Initial commercial flights will utilise the airport’s parallel runway while the primary landing strip undergoes ongoing long-term rehabilitation.
Limited logistics networks restarted early, with commercial cargo flights successfully resuming on 5 August 2026. The commercial launch was originally scheduled for 24 August, but authorities pushed the date to 1 September after an operational readiness drill on 19 August exposed safety and technical deficiencies. LASER Airlines has confirmed it will gradually resume its international routes including Madrid, Miami and Santo Domingo out of the temporary terminal starting 1 September.
