  • Oil prices rise above $100 per barrel amid Middle East tensions
  • US jet fuel averaged $4.04 per gallon
  • Earlier in 2026 jet fuel prices spiked toward $200 per barrel

JSX Chief Executive Alex Wilcox has warned that a jet fuel shortage could emerge soon as oil prices rise above $100 per barrel amid Middle East tensions. Wilcox suggested high prices and potential shortages may force weaker carriers out of the market. The comments came at a travel industry expo. The warning follows a turbulent year for the aviation sector.

Earlier in 2026, severe Middle East supply disruptions caused global jet fuel prices to temporarily spike toward $200 per barrel, triggering flight cuts by European carriers including Lufthansa and Ryanair. While the market has fluctuated since then, Wilcox noted that the latest price surge and potential fuel squeezes will likely weed out weaker carriers while forcing surviving airlines to double down on fuel efficiency. According to energy tracking data by Argus, the average cost of jet fuel in the United States stood at $4.04 per gallon just ahead of his announcement.
