Glasson Lakehouse, a four-star hotel near Athlone in County Westmeath, has reopened after closing on 26 August following HSE advice on a norovirus outbreak. A significant number of guests and staff were affected. Several weddings were relocated during the closure. The hotel confirmed reopening this week with events scheduled for the weekend. The HSE provided public health guidance but the decision to reopen rested with management after risk assessment.
The lakefront property, situated roughly 13 kilometres from Athlone, enacted a voluntary closure on 26 August 2026 after a substantial number of staff and guests fell ill with the highly infectious gastrointestinal virus. The decision was made following guidance from the Health Service Executive to facilitate deep-cleaning and strict outbreak-control measures. Four couples who were scheduled to marry at the hotel over the fortnight had to rapidly find alternative venues. The adjoining Glasson Golf Club was also shut during the peak of the sanitisation process.
Management expressed deep regret over the inconvenience caused and confirmed that they have worked closely with public health officials to ensure a safe environment ahead of welcoming back guests and resuming scheduled weekend events.
