Europe has recorded its busiest summer on record in 2026, with the aviation network handling an average of 35,959 flights per day between 1 June and 31 August. According to data released by Eurocontrol, this represents a 2.4pc increase compared to summer 2025 despite significant airspace disruptions linked to the ongoing war in the Middle East. A single-day record was shattered on Friday 10 July 2026 when 37,640 flights crossed the European network.
The conflict altered traditional tourist routes, forcing carriers to reroute flights and leading Europeans to choose destinations perceived as safer within their own continent. Volume dropped across eastern corridors and surrounding regions, notably affecting Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Türkiye. Traffic surged across southwest Europe and the Balkans, with countries including Albania, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia experiencing a substantial influx of flights.
Despite the record-breaking volume, overall flight arrival punctuality improved slightly by 1.2 percentage points compared to last year, with 72.6pc of flights landing on time. France was identified as the largest contributor to delays, accounting for 32pc of all management-related delays. Severe staffing and capacity issues led to frequent delays at major holiday hubs including Marseille, Athens and Barcelona. Regional aviation data confirmed that over 81m passengers travelled through England’s airports between April and June.
