London Northwestern Railway has revealed a new hourly direct train service connecting Birmingham New Street and the West Midlands directly to Manchester Airport. This service marks the first direct rail link between the West Midlands and the airport in decades, eliminating the need for passengers to change trains at Crewe, Wilmslow or Manchester city centre. Phase 1 begins on 13 December 2026 with trains running on the initial stretch between Birmingham New Street and Crewe serving 12 stations including the recently opened stations at Willenhall and Darlaston.
Phase 2 in May 2027 will see the service extended to Manchester Airport in time for the summer holiday season. When fully operational the hourly service will call at 17 stations across the West Midlands, Black Country, Staffordshire and Cheshire including Birmingham New Street, Tame Bridge Parkway, Darlaston, Willenhall, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Stone, Stoke-on-Trent, Longport, Kidsgrove, Alsager, Crewe, Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Wilmslow, Styal and Manchester Airport.
Travel details and finalized timetables are expected to be published by February 2027 with tickets going on sale approximately 12 weeks before the Phase 2 launch.
