Milan Malpensa Airport has launched a major expansion project named T1XL designed to cope with the surge in long haul, intercontinental and Extra Schengen flights. Managed by SEA Milan Airports this project expands Terminal 1 by constructing 14,500 square metres of new functional space and redeveloping another 28,650 square metres of existing space. The total investment for this initiative is valued at around €100m.
The primary focus of the T1XL project is to upgrade passenger throughput infrastructure and commercial offerings. The project will double the passport processing area to accommodate strict European entry and exit regulations and decrease queuing times. The most urgent passport control modifications are slated for phased delivery by mid 2027. The expansion introduces more baggage reclaim carousels, user friendly waiting areas and reconfigures the shopping experience with 21 new commercial spaces.
Construction is carefully structured to prevent disruption to existing flight schedules. It avoided conflicts during the high traffic period of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games. Intercontinental routes now account for 40pc of traffic. General structural contractor Di Vincenzo Dino and C is executing the building layout.
