Luxembourg’s Findel Airport halted all air traffic for approximately 52 minutes on Monday evening 21 September 2026 following the visual sighting of unauthorised drones near the airfield. The suspension managed by airport operator lux-Airport lasted from 21:38 until 22:30 local time leading to a wave of delayed and diverted flights. This incident marked the second time in less than a week that the airport had to close due to drone activity.
Just days earlier on Friday evening 18 September a more severe closure occurred. During that initial event 19 inbound flights including 17 operated by national carrier Luxair were diverted to nearby hubs like Brussels Airport stranding over 1,800 passengers for hours. The recurring sightings have triggered a high-level response from the Luxembourgish government.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden stated that the country is dealing with a new situation involving potentially larger more sophisticated drones in national airspace. A specialised government drone assessment team has been convened alongside law enforcement to analyse resilience strategies though no operators have been publicly identified or caught so far.
