Florida International University has launched the FIU Cruise Excellence Center led by the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. The advisory board has included presidents, chief executives and senior leaders from cruise lines and organisations spanning travel distribution, destinations and maritime services. Board members have helped FIU identify industry challenges, set research priorities, strengthen curricula and expand internship and executive education opportunities. Research areas have included future cruise workforce, emerging technology, environmental responsibility and crew well-being.

Jeanette Nuñez, president of FIU, shared that the launch of the FIU Cruise Excellence Center signifies a partnership in Miami and offers FIU an opportunity to engage with an industry that has importance to the region and global economy. Larry Pimentel, FIU distinguished cruise executive-in-residence and chair of the advisory board, shared that the centre is intended to be a working partnership rather than an advisory board in name only.
