ACI EUROPE, Amadeus, IATA, IDEMIA Public Security and SITA have formed the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition, calling on EU policymakers to ensure the Digital Omnibus supports voluntary and secure use of biometrics in travel. The coalition has sought a balanced regulatory approach enabling efficient experiences for air travellers while maintaining safeguards around responsible use of biometric technologies. The Digital Omnibus has been intended to simplify Europe’s digital rulebook, support innovation and strengthen competitiveness.

The coalition has urged policymakers to preserve passenger choice and allow citizens to benefit from opportunities biometrics can offer. Biometric verification has increased throughput, improved passenger flows and helped airports use existing terminal infrastructure more efficiently. Research cited by the coalition found that 74pc of travellers surveyed were willing to share biometric data in place of showing a passport or boarding pass, according to IATA’s Global Passenger Survey.

The coalition has included senior representatives from each member organisation including Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE; Fernando Cuesta, Senior Vice President at Amadeus; Thomas Reynaert, Senior Vice President at IATA; Lisa Shoemaker, Senior Vice President at IDEMIA Public Security; and Pedro Alves, Senior Vice President at SITA. The Advancing Responsible Biometrics in Europe Manifesto has outlined a balanced, evidence-based approach to biometric technologies.
