A sharp rise in American tourists has encouraged luxury hotel groups to expand in Spain. Arrivals from the United States jumped nearly 32pc in August to more than 480,000 visitors. Spain received 70.4m tourists in the year to date, up 5pc.
Around 2.3m US tourists arrived in Spain in the first half of 2026, a 9.5pc year-on-year increase. Annual US arrivals grew from 1m in 2014 to 4.2m by 2024. American tourists spend an average of $410 per day in key destinations like Mallorca, compared to about $240 to $260 for German and British visitors. Airlines including United Airlines expanded direct routes from US hubs to Madrid, Barcelona, Ibiza, Valencia, and Palma de Mallorca.
Local authorities in Barcelona and the Balearic Islands are cracking down on short-term holiday rentals. Barcelona is phasing out all 10,000 tourist apartments by 2028. Authorities are encouraging upscale and luxury hotel developments to target higher-value visitors. Spain leads Europe in hotel investments, tracking toward a record year exceeding €4.3bn in transactions.
