Italy’s Ministry of Tourism has activated the Staff House programme to provide accommodation for sector employees. Some 146 companies have received definitive funding approvals from a €120m package. The scheme aims to create 63,000 bed places.

The government is investing €120m over a three-year period from 2025 to 2027. Financial contributions go to eligible hospitality businesses to offset costs of building worker housing or provide rental subsidies. The initiative addresses seasonal and non-seasonal staff such as hotel employees, waiters, and restaurant workers. Workers often struggle to find affordable accommodation near workplaces due to high rents and over-tourism.

The roll-out aligns with domestic reforms introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration to combat industry labour shortages. It also serves as Italy’s measure amid pressure from the European Commission’s proposed Affordable Housing Act. The act aims to grant local authorities stricter control over short-term holiday rentals. The scheme aims to help businesses attract staff and improve competitiveness.
