Irish regional carrier CityJet has closed its operational base at Stockholm Arlanda Airport to concentrate its Nordic activities at Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. The decision forms part of a broader corporate reorganisation following the Irish wet-lease specialist’s exit from financial restructuring under new Danish ownership.
CityJet previously split its regional wet-lease operations for Scandinavian Airlines between Stockholm and Copenhagen. Operations out of Stockholm Arlanda ceased with remaining personnel and capacity moved to the primary hub at Copenhagen where the airline employs the vast majority of its crew and line maintenance staff. The carrier phased out its remaining 100-seat Bombardier CRJ1000ER aircraft and returned them to their lessors.
The airline now operates a uniform fleet of 18 Bombardier CRJ900LR regional aircraft primarily dedicated to a long-term ACMI agreement with SAS out of Copenhagen. Under majority owner Lars Thuesen the airline is evaluating its next steps for fleet modernisation with the fuel-efficient Embraer E2 family considered an industry alternative to replace its regional aircraft.
Key Details of the Reorganisation
- Base Closure: CityJet shut down its Stockholm Arlanda base as part of a strategic shift to consolidate its Scandinavian operations in Copenhagen.
- Fleet Consolidation: The airline has streamlined its operations around a uniform fleet of Bombardier/Mitsubishi CRJ900 aircraft, phasing out older or mixed types (such as the CRJ1000ER units).
- ACMI Focus: CityJet continues to operate exclusively as an ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) provider, primarily servicing Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) from its central Copenhagen hub
- Restructuring Context: The move follows recent corporate restructuring under new ownership (CityJet Holding ApS) and post-examinership adjustments to stabilize long-term wet-lease agreements.
IIn parallel with closing the Stockholm base, CityJet has altered its fleet makeup:
- Transition to an All-CRJ900 Fleet: CityJet phased out its remaining 100-seat Bombardier CRJ1000ER aircraft, returning them to their lessors.
- Uniform SAS Operations: The carrier now operates a uniform fleet of 18 Bombardier CRJ900LR regional jets, primarily dedicated to a long-term ACMI agreement with SAS out of Copenhagen.
- Next-Gen Fleet Evaluation: Under majority owner Lars Thuesen, the airline is actively evaluating its next steps for fleet modernization. Management is using a designated window to plan long-term replacement strategy, with the fuel-efficient Embraer E2 family considered a strong industry alternative to replace its regional jets.
