US President Donald Trump has walked back threats to ban Canadian aerospace company Bombardier from the American market stating he changed his mind after learning about the company’s footprint and workforce inside the United States. Speaking at a campaign rally in Wichita Kansas on 19 October 2026 Trump noted he now plans to take care of those people to protect local manufacturing jobs.

The original threat in September 2026 demanded Bombardier stop selling its jets in the US unless it shifted all production to American soil. In August 2026 Washington imposed tariffs on roughly $20bn (€18.4bn) worth of Canadian goods. Canada retaliated with its own tariffs prompting the Trump administration to ban imports of Canadian alcoholic beverages motorcycles and dairy products.

Bombardier employs roughly 1,500 workers directly in Wichita Kansas and around 3,500 across multiple US states. The company spends over $2.5bn (€2.3bn) annually across 2,800 American suppliers spanning 47 states. Just a week prior to Trump’s speech Bombardier unveiled a new $50m (€46m) investment in Wichita including a new skills development centre for aircraft technicians.
