Mediation between Lufthansa and the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit has ended without a result. Discussions covered pay rises and company pension arrangements for around 5,000 pilots. A broader mediation process continues behind closed doors so immediate strike action is not expected. Further talks are planned.
The two conciliators former state premiers Roland Koch and Bodo Ramelow refrained from issuing a formal ruling providing non-binding recommendations for further talks. The gridlock stems from a long-simmering dispute over occupational pensions future salary increases and a redundancy plan for Lufthansa Cityline.
Lufthansa is pushing to cut structural production costs to restructure its underperforming core brand. The union is resisting management’s strategy of shifting aircraft and personnel to secondary flight operations governed by cheaper collective bargaining terms. The carrier noted it remains committed to pursuing a solution with the union.
