German police are investigating a security alert at Leipzig/Halle Airport after a vehicle broke through a perimeter fence late on 17 October. Federal and Saxony state police launched a search operation using helicopters and drones after discovering a break in the fence shortly before 23:00 local time. The vehicle appeared to have driven a few metres into the restricted airport grounds before exiting.
Authorities have not located the vehicle or its occupants and are determining whether the incident was an accident or a crime. The damage occurred in the northern section of the airport near where three Russian Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft have been grounded under EU sanctions since 2022. Airport officials noted the aircraft were not immediately adjacent to the broken barrier.
The airport’s northern runway was closed and cargo operations were rerouted to the southern runway. The northern runway reopened on 18 October at 14:00 after security sweeps were completed. The incident follows a separate scare in August 2026 when an explosive-laden drone was discovered near parked Ukrainian cargo aircraft at the same airport.
