American Express credit card fees on the rise for travellers

American Express has increased the annual fees for several of its credit cards. For new cardholders, the changes include fee increases for cards such as the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card, Platinum Card, Harrods American Express Card, Nectar Credit Card, Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card, and American Express Business Gold Card.

Existing cardholders will be notified of the fee changes, which will take effect on their next billing date from 29 February 2024. Cardholders who choose not to accept the changes can cancel their card and receive a pro-rata refund of the annual fee.

American Express has also

  • introduced enhanced sign-up bonuses for some of its cards. This includes increased bonus points for cards like the Platinum Card, Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card, and Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card.
  • launched its biggest ever “invite a friend” offer, allowing existing cardholders to earn bonus points for successful referrals. Referees who take out a Gold card or Platinum card by 9 January 2024 will also receive bonus points.
  • announced Members Week which will take place between 16 and 22 October, featuring deals and offers such as 10% off bills at select dining outlets and £75 cashback for spending £300 with American Express Travel.
