“When we talk about sustainability, there is a paradigm in tourism,” Frank Oostdam told delegates at the world summit of travel agencies in Granada.

“We are the only industry that connects people across cultures, prejudices. We realize that what could divide us is insignificant compared to what unites us. We all want clean air, drinkable water, etc. That is also sustainability.”

“Practically speaking, in all travel agencies, we can use electric vehicles, reduce paper usage, recycle, offer non-crowded destinations, and provide accommodations with sustainability certifications, among other practices. Destinations play a key role in offering sustainable products and packages.

“We need to engage with the public sector. We need to have a more active role because there is no plan B. At this year’s climate conference (COP), we need to be present and showcase our vision: tourism has a lot to contribute to sustainability. If we can do this, we will improve the lives of future generations.”
