Ryanair is highly interested in acquiring additional slots at Rome Fiumicino, which are likely to be vacated as a condition for Lufthansa Group’s takeover of ITA Airways.

Ryanair’s market share in Italy is currently 38pc, one of the highest in any market.

The airline is already the second-largest operator at Fiumicino, with plans to add five new routes during the Summer 2024 season.

Ryanair is less focused on acquiring slots at Milan Linate, as it aims to grow its presence at Milan Bergamo and Milan Malpensa airports instead.

Rivals such as Wizz Air and easyJet are keen on expanding their access to the restricted Linate airport.
