An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission for a new €200m tunnel at Dublin Airport under the ‘Crosswind’ runway, upholding a previous decision by Fingal Co Council from last year.

The tunnel is 700 metres long and will improve access and safety on the airfield, allowing for segregation of aircraft and vehicles and access to the West Apron.

The project will create 160 jobs during construction, which is estimated to take about three years in total.

While the project has been approved, objectors have an eight-week period to bring a Judicial Review of the decision by An Bord Pleanála, with Ryanair arguing that the project is unnecessary due to the low frequency of cross-wind conditions affecting aircraft movements.

Ryanair have criticised the project as being too costly.
