Dublin airport to handle 30,000 soccer fans for Europa Cup final

Dublin Airport said 20,000 German and Italian football fans in addition to 10,000 fans from 20 other countries around the world are flying into the city for Europa Cup final. Fifty eight extra flights will arrive and depart the airport to facilitate the fans.

The airport has dedicated staff to help fans on their arrivals and free transport is being provided for them into Dublin city centre.

Roads around the Aviva stadium will be closed, and public transport operations adjusted for the movement of fans from Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta.

Lansdowne Road Dart Station will close at 4pm; shuttle buses will serve mobility-impaired passengers between Grand Canal Dock, Sandymount stations, and the Sandymount Hotel.

Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium and RDS Simmonscourt will serve as Fan Meeting Points with entertainment, food, drink, and toilet facilities, before fans march to the stadium at around 5:30pm.

A fan festival at Dublin Castle from 10am to 5pm will include the Europa League trophy display and various entertainment activities, while Dublin Airport expects 30,000 incoming fans, providing dedicated staff and free transport to the city.

A traffic cordon will be established from 3pm at a number of roads around the area, with access only granted to residents who have proof of their ID or address.

  • Lansdowne Road – both sides from Northumberland Road to Herbert Bridge
  • Shelbourne Road – both sides Shelbourne Avenue to the Podium Entrance.
  • Havelock Square – right hand side from bath Ave to Gate 5
  • Herbert Road – both sides from Herbert Bridge to Tritonville Road
  • Lansdowne Lane – both sides
  • Northumberland Road – Both sides from Haddington Road to Lansdowne Road
  • South Lotts Road

Ireland last hosted the final in 2011. Since single match format finals were introduced in 1998 the final has been hosted by 18 countries, three times each by Germany and Netherlands, twice each by France, Ireland, Poland, Spain and Sweden, and once each by Azerbaijan, Denmark, England, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland and Turkey.
