Planning is set to be submitted for a tourism and leisure park at the former Reenroe Hotel in Ballinskelligs, South Kerry, with plans for self-catering apartments, holiday homes, mobile homes, hobbit huts, glamping pods, campervan stands, and a leisure complex.

The proposed development also includes amenities like a swimming pool, play areas, surf shop, and parking facilities, with associated works such as a wastewater treatment system and an ESB substation.

The public will have five weeks to make submissions once the planning application is officially lodged. If approved, the project will transform the vacant site and the South Kerry region.

The applicant, Rinn Rua Holiday Park Ltd, is connected to the family operating Sir Rodger’s Caravan Park at Banna Beach, who purchased the site several years ago. The Reenroe Hotel, once a luxurious establishment, has been inactive for over 30 years despite previous failed redevelopment attempts.

A previous development was granted planning in 2005 but refused after it was appealed. Planning applications lodged to redevelop the site included plans for a 120 room hotel and conference facility, health and fitness facility, restaurant, bar, retail unit, tennis courts and play areas in 2007.
