Dublin Airport has removed 5,000 honey bees that had “taken up residence” near Terminal 1.

Airport officials, with the assistance of a local beekeeper, safely collected and removed the honey bees, sharing a picture of the process online.

The airport team took action to ensure the safety of the bees while seeing off 120,000 passengers on the same day.

Dublin Airport planted over 1,000 metres of new hedgerows last year to increase biodiversity on the campus, benefiting pollinators like bees, butterflies, and moths.

The hedgerows provide food and shelter for pollinators, creating vital wildlife corridors within the airport.

Dublin Airport and Cork Airport, both operated by daa, have their own bee apiary, with Dublin Airport housing four beehives through a partnership with Kellogg’s.

The beekeeping program not only supports pollinators and produces local honey but also contributes to Dublin Airport’s Charity Partners through the sale of honey.
