MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys are utilising smart containers from sister company MSC to ensure the freshest produce is loaded onto their ships after delivery from warehouses.
The smart containers are equipped with internet-connected devices that collect data on factors like position, temperature, and humidity, which are monitored remotely from a centralized customer service center in Antwerp, Belgium.
Paolo Raia, Managing Director of MSC Procurement & Logistics, highlighted the positive impact of smart containers on food supply, especially in markets where local sourcing is a challenge, such as the Middle East where some goods take weeks to reach ships.
The real-time monitoring of temperature and humidity in transit allows for adjustments to be made if necessary, ensuring the delivery of the freshest and finest food for guests. Smart containers also help in quickly resolving any problems during transportation to maintain the freshness of chilled and frozen goods like meat, seafood, and dairy produce.
