Greece is facing a spending downturn despite a surge in tourism this summer, with tourists spending less time in certain areas and less money overall, impacting the economic benefits for locals.

While total tourism revenue in May increased by 6.8pc, arrivals surged by 21.3pc; the average spend per trip dropped by 12.2pc, indicating a decline in tourist expenditure.

Brits traditionally flock to Greece for summer holidays, with popular destinations including islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Crete, as well as the historic capital city Athens.

The trend of decreasing spending per trip started in 2022, with international travelers spending an average of €570.70, down 3.5pc compared to the previous year. A further decrease in spending is predicted for the upcoming year, raising concerns among tourism officials in Athens about the impact on local communities.
