ANA has introduced AeroSHARK technology on its Boeing 777 aircraft to reduce drag, enhance fuel efficiency, and lower emissions, making it the first airline in the world to apply this innovation to both passenger and freighter versions of the aircraft.

The AeroSHARK technology, developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, features a surface film inspired by shark skin with riblets that reduce drag. ANA’s first modified Boeing 777F has begun cargo flights, with plans to extend the technology to a passenger aircraft, demonstrating the airline’s commitment to sustainability.

ANA’s implementation of AeroSHARK technology aligns with its environmental strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability. The airline aims to validate the effectiveness of the technology on its Boeing 777 aircraft and expand its use across other aircraft types.

Lufthansa Technik holds Supplemental Type Certificates for the AeroSHARK modification on various Boeing 777 aircraft, with approximately 20 long-haul aircraft already operating with the technology globally. Efforts are ongoing to further develop AeroSHARK to help more airlines achieve their sustainability goals.
