
Waterford Treasures is celebrating its 25th anniversary with an international conference titled “Waterford and the Wider World 1500–1800,” scheduled for November 8-9, showcasing the city’s rich historical connections.
The conference aims to highlight the diverse heritage of Waterford, featuring speakers from Ireland and abroad who will discuss the city’s historical ties with England, Europe, and the Americas, including impactful topics such as involvement in the slave trade.
Notable sessions will include discussions on Waterford’s connections to France and Iberia, focusing on trade, merchant activities, and religious networks, with presentations from experts: John Bergin (University College Dublin), Matteo Binasco (University for Foreigners of Siena), David Brown (Trinity College Dublin), Javier Burguillo (University of Salamanca), David Dickson (Trinity College Dublin), Susan Flavin (Trinity College Dublin), Kate Hodgson (University College Cork), Marian Lyons (Maynooth University), Andrew Mackillop (University of Glasgow), John Mannion (Memorial University, St. John’s), Ivar McGrath (University College Dublin), Eamon Ó Ciosáin (Maynooth University), Thomas O’Connor (Maynooth University), Giada Pizzoni (European University Institute in Florence), Sandrine Tromeur (Maynooth University), Thomas Truxes (New York University), Julian Walton (Dunhill Multi-Education Centre).

Chairman of Waterford Treasures Museums Des Whelan shared “To mark Waterford Treasures’ 25th anniversary we have organised a conference to celebrate the diversity of Waterford.” Head Curator Cliona Purcell added “Waterford Treasures’ exhibitions reflect the many Waterford people who made their homes abroad. With this conference we hope to bring their lives to a wider audience.”
