Some hotels may not return to the tourism industry after serving as migrant centre, according to CBRE director Lisa Keogh, unless they undergo significant renovations.
Ms Keogh noted there will be ongoing demand for emergency accommodation, indicating that not all hotels will revert to their original use.
The use of hotels for refugees and asylum-seekers significantly impacts the tourism sector. A Fáilte Ireland report earlier this year suggests 77,000 beds from the tourism sector are being used to support migrants, with estimates suggesting an economic effect of €750m to €1.1bn.
Regional businesses with limited lodging options claim to be disproportionately affected by the State’s reliance on the tourism sector for accommodating migrants, resulting in displacement of their bed stock.
