Chicago reveals details of 140th anniversary of world’s first skyscraper

Chicago is to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the world’s first skyscraper in 2025.

The Home Insurance Building, recognized as, completed in 1885 by architect William Le Baron Jenney.

The city offers diverse architectural tours, including the popular Chicago Architecture Centre River Cruise and the engineering-themed Marvels & Masterpieces walking tour, both providing unique insights into the city’s architectural evolution.

New attractions like the Obama Presidential Centre, set to open in 2026, will feature a museum and community spaces, while the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House remains a highlight for visitors interested in Prairie-style architecture.

With various tours and events available through institutions such as the Chicago Architecture Centre, visitors can explore Chicago’s rich architectural history, from the famous L train to the Magnificent Mile.
