Previous belly landing incidents have included two incidents in which there were no fatalities:

  • LOT Polish Airlines Flight 016. On November 1, 2011, an emergency was declared by Captain Tadeusz Wrona while operating LOT Polish Airlines Flight 016, a Boeing 767. The flight, traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport to Warsaw Chopin Airport, experienced a loss of landing gear. The aircraft, noted as the newest 767 airframe in the fleet, executed a belly landing in Warsaw, resulting in a small fire. Fortunately, all passengers and crew onboard were evacuated without injuries. Following the incident, Warsaw Chopin Airport was closed for more than a day.
  • Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303. On May 22, 2020, Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303, an Airbus A320, executed a belly landing due to the landing gear not being deployed, a consequence of pilot error. Although the crew attempted a go-around, the damaged engines from the belly landing subsequently failed. The aircraft crashed into a densely populated residential area near Karachi’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, leading to the tragic loss of 97 out of 99 individuals onboard, along with one person on the ground.
  • FedEx Flight 1376 On October 5, 2023, FedEx Flight 1376, a Boeing 757 departing from Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport en route to Memphis International Airport, was compelled to return for an emergency belly landing when its landing gear failed to lower. The aircraft skidded off the runway upon landing; however, there were no injuries reported among the crew.
  • Jeju Air Flight 2216. On December 29, 2024, Jeju Air Flight 2216, a Boeing 737-800, encountered a landing gear failure while approaching Muan Airport in South Korea, reportedly following a bird strike. The aircraft was unable to stop on the runway, colliding with the airport perimeter fence and igniting into flames. The incident resulted in at least 47 fatalities among the 181 people onboard, with at least three survivors.
