The SS United States is on its last voyage, having departed from Philadelphia and recently arriving off the Florida coastline, headed for Mobile, Alabama.

The former ocean liner, built in 1952, is being towed by the tugboat Vinik No. 6 and is expected to take around two weeks to reach its destination.

The ship will be transformed into the world’s largest artificial reef after undergoing a year of preparations to remove hazardous materials before its deployment about 20 nautical miles south of Destin-Fort Walton Beach.

Plans are underway to create a land-based museum in Destin-Fort Walton Beach, celebrating the history of the SS United States through exhibits of its significant components and historical archives.
