Visitors to the southern United States have been warned of the danger of contracting measles. The number of measles cases in Texas has surged to 400, with Gaines County on the New Mexico border identified as the outbreak’s source, reporting 270 cases.

The CDC confirmed 483 measles cases across 19 states in 2024, emphasising that many cases involve unvaccinated individuals.

Children aged 5 to 17 represent the majority of cases, followed closely by those aged 4 and under, demonstrating higher vulnerability among younger populations.

Reports indicate some unvaccinated children treated for measles in Texas are developing signs of vitamin A toxicity, raising concerns about alternative treatments.

Vaccine exemptions in Gaines County have increased from 7.5pc to 17.5pc among kindergartners over a decade, contributing to the current outbreak’s severity.
