High Court extends suspension of the passenger cap at Dublin Airport into winter

The High Court has prolonged the suspension of the passenger cap at Dublin Airport into winter until the legal case by Aer Lingus and Ryanair is resolved.

Judge Barry O’Donnell stated that decisions regarding requests from airport operator daa are still pending.

The current cap limits passengers to 32m annually, originally established as part of 2007 planning permission for a second terminal.

Last year, Dublin Airport exceeded this cap by over 1m travellers.

Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, has expressed hope for the cap’s removal and called for swift government legislation to address the issue.

Speaking outside Leinster House after a meeting with Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien Michael O’Leary said: “They’re going to scrap the cap but progress is slow. Darragh O’Brien said he’s going to move legislation within weeks. I’m not sure I necessarily believe him, but lets wait and see what they do. Legislation on the matter needs to be passed within the next month or two“.
