The Balearic Islands government will cease using social media influencers to promote destinations due to issues arising from selfie tourism.

Last summer, Caló des Moro in Mallorca experienced a surge of 4,000 daily visitors, despite only having capacity for around 100 beachgoers.

The local mayor, Maria Pons, reported significant overcrowding, with 1,200 vehicles accessing the cove each day.

The intention behind influencer content was to redirect tourists to less crowded areas, but it has instead overwhelmed protected sites across Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza.

Local authorities have removed images of Caló des Moro from their websites and called for an end to promoting the site to control the influx of tourists.
