Greece reports visitor numbers fell by 2pc in June

The Bank of Greece report on the state of the Greek Tourism for June 2016 reports decrease and decline except from Russia.

The number of inbound visitors in June 2016 declined by 2pc year-on-year to 2,971,000. Ireland’s projected visitor numbers for the year however are increasing back towards 90,000 from 72,654 in 2015.

Arrivals from outside the EU28 are down 18.1pc, whereas arrivals from within the EU28 increased by 6.5pc. In greater detail, arrivals from the euro area fell by 2.7pc to 1,036,000, while those from the non-euro area EU28 countries increased by 17.4pc (June 2016: 1,071,000, June 2015: 912,000).

Arrivals from Germany decreased by 3.3pc to 399,000, while those from France fell by 32.7pc to 137,000. Arrivals from England increased by 26.6pc to 473,000. Arrivals from Russia fell by 16.0pc to 80,000 and those from the United States by 21.6pc to 92,000.

In January-June 2016, the number of inbound visitors decreased by 1.6pc to 7,446,000, from 7,566,000 in the same period of 2015.

Arrivals from Germany rose by 0.8pc to 888,000, while those from France fell by 20.6pc to 368,000. Arrivals from England increased by 13.1pc to 928,000. Finally, turning to non-EU28 countries, arrivals from Russia rose by 7.7pc to 162,000 and those from the United States by 6.4pc to 305,000.

Based on provisional data, the balance of travel services showed a surplus of €1,719m in June 2016, down 3.6pc from a surplus of €1,783m in June 2015. More specifically, travel receipts decreased by 5.4pc to €1,851m in June 2016, from €1,957m in the same month of 2015. Travel payments fell more sharply, by 23.9pc (June 2016: €132m, June 2015: €174m). The drop in travel receipts resulted from a 4.0pc decline in average expenditure per trip and a 2.0pc fall in arrivals. Net receipts from travel services accounted for 79.8pc of total net receipts from services and more than offset (122.3pc) the goods deficit.

In January-June 2016, the balance of travel services showed a surplus of €2,991m, down 6.7pc from a surplus of €3,205m in the same period of 2015. This development was due to a decrease of €242m or 5.8pc in travel receipts, as travel payments dropped by €28m or 2.9pc.

The decrease in travel receipts resulted from a 1.6pc decline in arrivals and a 4.9pc fall in average expenditure per trip. Net receipts from travel services offset 36.1pc of the goods deficit and accounted for 65.3pc of total net receipts from services.

Receipts from residents of the EU28 increased by 1.5pc (June 2016: €1,316m, June 2015: €1,297m), while receipts from outside the EU28 dropped by 21.9pc (June 2016: €469m, June 2015: €601m).

The increase in receipts from within the EU28 resulted from a rise of €97m or 18.9pc in receipts from residents of non-euro area EU28 countries, whereas receipts from euro area residents fell by 10.0pc (June 2016: €704m, June 2015: 782m).

Among major countries of origin, receipts from Germany fell by 13.4pc to €295m and those from France dropped by 28.0pc to €103m. Receipts from England increased by 24.8pc to €388m. Turning to non-EU28 countries, receipts from Russia dropped by 19.4pc to €61m and those from the United States fell by 24.4pc to €122m.

In January-June 2016, travel receipts decreased by 5.8pc to €3,929m, relative to the same period of 2015. This development is attributed to lower receipts from within the EU28 (down 4.1pc to €2,547m) and from outside the EU28 (down 11.0pc to €1,230m).

Receipts from euro area residents decreased by 9.8pc to €1,477m and those from residents of non-euro area EU28 countries increased by 5.3pc to €1,071m.

Receipts from Germany dropped by 13.4pc to €585m and those from France by 19.8pc to €256m. Receipts from England increased by 2.2pc to €648m. Turning to non-EU28 countries, receipts from Russia fell by 8.3pc to €115m and receipts from the United States by 7.4pc to €313m.
