The full 24km South East Greenway route is set to open to the public in the summer of 2027.

The section from Rhu Glen to Waterford is largely complete, but access delays are due to the North Quays project in Waterford, requiring an accessible ramp by November 2025.

Lot 4, including Mount Elliot Tunnel, will go to tender by the end of 2025, with contractors on site by March or April 2026.

Other sections are under investigation, with tenders planned for Q1 2026 and contractors expected by summer 2026. An active travel scheme in New Ross, including new footpaths and cycle lanes, awaits the widening of O’Hanrahan Bridge.

Sean Meyler shared: “Works have been substantially completed from the Rhu Glen to Waterford for some months. What’s holding us up is we need access to the route from the North Quays project in Waterford with an accessible ramp, that won’t be available until November.”

At Lot 4 (which goes through Mount Elliot Tunnel) the design is advancing well and the programme is to go out to tender at the end of the year with contractors on site in March or April 2026. Investigation works are continuing on the other sections with tenders expected to go out in Q1 of next year with the contractor on site by the summer. We’re still looking at completion by the summer of 2027.”
