Dublin City Council has opened Phase 3 of the Royal Canal Greenway on 26 September 2025, from Cross Guns Bridge to Newcomen Bridge.

The 2.1km section links Phibsboro to the River Liffey, integrating with the Clontarf to City Centre route. Features include a new pedestrian and cycle bridge near Lock 3 and a community plaza along the route.

Construction began in February 2023 but faced delays due to material delivery and finishing works. The greenway forms part of the 314km Dublin City Active Travel Network, funded by the National Transport Authority.

Lord Mayor Ray McAdam shared: “As a local, I will be an enthusiastic user of the scheme myself and look forward to experiencing the benefits of the safe, segregated walking and cycling infrastructure and much-enhanced public realm.”

Minister Paschal Donohoe shared: “The long-term aim is that the Dublin parts of the greenway will link up to the 130km Royal Canal Greenway, which is Ireland’s longest greenway and runs from Maynooth to Cloondara.”
