San Antoine B&B in Cahersiveen operates since 1957 as a six-bed family business open six months yearly, balancing books only in June to August.

Second-generation owner Alan Landers operates as sole trader paying 13.5 per cent VAT on earnings over €42,500, offsetting with expenses like electricity and oil.

Government budget cut VAT from 13.5 per cent to 9 per cent for food and catering businesses like restaurants and pubs, but excluded accommodation providers such as B&Bs despite many serving food.

Landers called for B&B sector week-long strike next summer after budget offered no relief for struggling businesses.

B&Bs face pressures pushing the tourism cornerstone into decline, with big chains benefiting while small family operations like San Antoine receive no reprieve.

Alan Landers shared: “Another kick in the arse for a sector of the tourism industry that has seen no recognition for the vital role it plays.”
