The Irish Self-Catering Federation conference 2025 will be opened by Councillor Michael Shannon, focusing on overtourism, community, and conservation.

The federation says that the legislation should clarify the position on second homes and short-term rental properties, originally built for self-catering. Many now serve long-term rentals, council or government contracts, or second homes and require removal from short-term rental planning lists.

No clear data exist on derelict and vacant properties in Ireland, and policy is being informed by anecdotal evidence.

The Minister for Housing introduces a tax on derelict properties at a rate of at least seven per cent of site market value. Legislation for the tax, operated by the Revenue Commissioners, proceeds next year.

The Federation sharedNo clear data on number of derelict and vacant properties in Ireland, but Minister for Housing is now focusing on taxing at 7%+ on derelict properties. Ghost STR properties were built as self-catering rental units, now many are long term rental, on council or Government contracts or second homes and need to be removed from STR Planning listing.”
