  • Aurora Expeditions expanded its CounterCurrent partnership to all three ships.
  • The technology was tested aboard Douglas Mawson during the 2025-26 Antarctic season.
  • Sylvia Earle and Greg Mortimer now feature CounterCurrent Mark 3 Triton sensors.
  • The trial delivered 39 route recommendations and more than 5,600 environmental observations over 126 days.
  • Early sea trials indicated fuel savings of more than 2pc to 5pc over 24 hours.

Sasha Buch shared “At Aurora Expeditions, we’ve spent more than 35 years exploring some of the world’s most remote environments, and we recognize the responsibility that comes with operating in these extraordinary places.”

Aurora Expeditions has expanded its partnership with CounterCurrent to deploy AI-powered ocean forecasting technology across all three ships. The technology was tested aboard the Douglas Mawson during the 2025-26 Antarctic season. The Sylvia Earle and Greg Mortimer now feature the upgraded CounterCurrent Mark 3 Triton sensors.

The sensors support data collection in remote regions including periods without sunlight or satellite connectivity. Data from the trial delivered 39 route recommendations and more than 5,600 environmental observations over 126 days of operation. Early sea trials indicated fuel savings of more than 2pc to 5pc over 24 hours.

Preliminary modelling suggested potential savings of up to 5pc to 15pc in suitable conditions depending on vessel type, operating speed and route. The findings remain preliminary with further testing required. The next phase will explore fleet-wide forecasting and onboard forecasting that could reduce reliance on cloud-based processing.
