CORSIA credits raised at A4E briefing in Brussels

  • Work remains to make sufficient CORSIA credits available
  • EU implementing acts needed for interoperability and credit acceptance
  • CORSIA payments deducted from ETS in Europe preventing double payment
  • England has yet to clarify CORSIA and ETS interaction
  • Moving from ETS to CORSIA would reduce airfares by 8pc to 10pc

Airlines for Europe is indicating that work remains to make sufficient CORSIA credits available during the Brussels briefing. Implementing acts need to be adopted by the EU to facilitate interoperability and acceptance of acceptable credits. CORSIA details are not the biggest part of A4E’s business according to panel members.

The panel shared that CORSIA payments were deducted from ETS in Europe preventing double payment. England has yet to clarify the situation and clarification was absolutely needed. Paying twice on the same emission under two different schemes was described as absurd.

The briefing heard that moving from ETS to CORSIA would immediately benefit consumers. Airfares across Europe would fall by between 8pc and 10pc according to estimates. The saving would be passed to consumers if Europe was serious about competitiveness.

Kenton Jarvis shared:  I think there is still work to be done to make sufficient credits available, and the EU also has some implementing acts that need to be adopted in order to facilitate interoperability and acceptance of what is an acceptable credit. But the details of CORSIA are not the biggest part of A4E’s business. When you’re paying CORSIA and ETS in Europe it doesn’t double up, your CORSIA payment will be deducted from your ETS. In England they have yet to clarify that, and that absolutely needs clarification because the idea of paying twice on the same emission under two different schemes is absolutely absurd. I know it’s something they’re looking at, but they need to just get on and clarify the situation. If we were successful in our campaign to move from ETS to CORSIA, the immediate beneficiary would be consumers. Airfares across Europe would come down by between 8 and 10pc straight away. It’s a tax that gets billed on to consumers and it’s a saving that would be passed on to consumers. So if Europe is serious about competitiveness, move from ETS to CORSIA straight away and see airfares fall and air travel grow significantly.
